Chateau Kirwan - Margaux 2016

The 2016 Kirwan is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot picked up 49 hectoliters per hectare between 27 September until 18 October. The nose needed some encouragement from the glass, perhaps not quite as cohesive as I was expecting, angular black fruit with a dash of white pepper. It just felt rather broody and unsettled at this early stage. On the palate, I discerned some hardness on the tannin, rendering this a more masculine Kirwan that will hopefully flesh out once in bottle. With a new winery, I am anticipating great things from Kirwan. This might be a wine that will blossom later than others, so I will keep a watchful eye. Remarquable property surrounded by 39 hectares of vines, Chateau Kirwan is situated in the Medoc, in Cantenac, which is 45 minutes away from Bordeaux. 3rd classified growth – Appellation Margaux – the property, which was named after an Irish owner in the 18th century, has belonged to the Schyler family since 1925. The chateau, a sober but refined architecture, witness to the French nobility’s art of living prior to the French revolution, is surrounded by a beautiful park of 2 hectares.

Chateau Kirwan is a wine that is produced from the best parcels of the vineyard that have mainly gravel soils, but some are also clay. The fruit is picked and sorted twice by hand, then vinified in separate batches corresponding to individual vineyard parcels. Half the oak barrels used to age the wine for eighteen months are renewed every year.
