Chateau Mouton Rothschild is a prestigious winery located in the Pauillac appellation of the Bordeaux region in France. The winery has a rich history that dates back to the mid-19th century. In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, a member of the prominent Rothschild family of bankers, purchased the estate and began to make improvements to the vineyards and winemaking facilities. The estate was originally known as Chateau Brane-Mouton, and it wasn't until 1922 that it was officially renamed Chateau Mouton Rothschild.
In 1924, the winery was classified as a Second Growth in the famous Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, which is still used today to classify the best Bordeaux wines. During World War II, the winery was confiscated by the German army and used as a headquarters. After the war, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Nathaniel's great-grandson, took over the estate and set about improving the quality of the wine. He introduced new winemaking techniques and modernized the facilities, and in 1973, Chateau Mouton Rothschild was elevated to the status of a First Growth in the Bordeaux classification.
