Chateau Pavie – St Emilion 1st Grand Cru 2016

The 2016 Pavie a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Very deep purple-black in color, it needs a little coaxing to begin, slowly unfurling to reveal a fragrant perfume of violets, chocolate-covered cherries, crushed blueberries and eucalyptus over a core of preserved plums, kirsch, black raspberries and creme de cassis plus hints of licorice and chargrilled meat. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, it has a solid foundation of firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness interknit with the black fruit preserves and minerally layers, finishing very long and very decadent. Superb!

Pavie’s vineyards have been planted with vines since the Roman era, although it wasn’t until the 19th century that the chateau began its rise to greatness. The defining moment of Pavie’s modern history came in 1998 when supermarket magnate Gerard Perse purchased the property. Pavie was already considered one of Saint-emilion’s highest-rated Grand Cru estates at that time, but Perse immediately set about transforming the chateau with extensive works in the vineyard, updated winemaking equipment and a brand-new cellar facility.

This hard work paid off in 2012 when Pavie was upgraded to Premier Grand Cru Classe A, the highest ranking for Saint-emilion held by just three other estates: Chateau Ausone, Chateau Cheval Blanc and Chateau Angelus.
