Showing nicely, the 2017 Chateau Phelan Segur is a textbook Saint-Estephe that plays beautifully in the vintage. Classis Saint-Estephe earthy dark fruits, spice box, cedary herbs, and hints of chocolate all emerge from the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a rounded, seamless texture, loads of sweet fruit, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful effort that readers should snatch up. Drink bottles over the coming 15-20 years.   James Suckling: 95Pts; Decanter: 94Pts; Vinous: 94Pts; Wine Enthusiast: 93Pts; Wine Spectator: 93Pts; Robert Parker: 92Pts

The history of Chateau Phelan Segur is linked to a young Irish wine merchant, Bernard Phelan, who left his homeland at the end of the 18th century to settle in Bordeaux. In 1805, he acquired the Clos de Garamey located in Saint Estephe and completed his first acquisition with the purchase of the Segur de Cabanac estate in 1810. At his death, Chateau Segur de Garamey was passed on to his son who devoted his life to wearing ever higher the reputation and quality of the wines produced. The Chateau will change owners several times thereafter, and becomes the property of Xavier Gardinier in 1985. Xavier Gardinier runs the property with his sons and have undertaken restoration work to restore the property the luster of its past. After more than thirty years at the head of the property, the Gardinier family passed the reins of the estate to Philippe Van de Vyvere. This great wine enthusiast, fulfills one of his most cherished dreams by taking back this prestigious vintage.

The complexity of the Saint-Estephe terroir, of which Chateau Phelan Segur is a perfect example, is an important element. The surface of the vineyard is 70 hectares. The grape variety is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot. The average age of the vineyard is 35 years old. Fabrice Bacquey, cellar master, preserves this noble raw material that is the grape. He must respect the style of the property by expressing the best vintage. With the invaluable help of Michel Rolland, consultant oenologist, some of the lots are destined to join the Grand Vin of Chateau Phelan Segur, while others are destined for the second Frank Phelan wine.
