The 2017 Troplong Mondot, the first under the new regime of former Cos d’Estournel manager Aymeric de Gironde, has a gorgeous bouquet with well defined red and black fruit, hints of dark chocolate and crushed flowers, a subtle mineral undercurrent that becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is a much fresher and balanced style of Troplong Mondot that tended to be over-egged in the past The terroir is much more evident where it counts – in the glass. There is a pleasant spiciness that comes through with aeration and a touch of sense of tension from start to finish. If this represents how this estate will continue, then the new era is going to be festooned with some exemplary wines. Drink 2022-2042. Saint-Emilion’s first Grand Cru Classe, Chateau Troplong Mondot distinguishes itself with elegance by the identity of its wine, its mastery of the vineyard cultivated like a garden and its way of welcoming to the property. Established on the highest point of the appellation, this 33-hectare on a single bloc benefits from exposure and ideal geological conditions. The unique diversity of its soils is revealed through powerful and elegant wines, complex and precise. The story of Troplong Mondot was empowered by charismatic personalities who lead the vineyard towards excellence with a singular vision. Since 2017, Aymeric de Gironde brings a new breath, while respecting the values and spirit of the place.

The elevated position of the place gives a part of its soil a unique typicity found in wine and an ideal exposure that offers all types of exposure to the sun. The classic terroir of Saint-Emilion is found there, enriched with fragments of flint, which can not be found anywhere else. The property is 33 hectares and the grape variety is 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc. Thanks to the collaboration with Claude and Lydia Bourguignon, the viticultural techniques are adapted to the peculiarities of each parcel to underline its aromatic identity.

At the tasting, Chateau Troplong Mondot is a balanced wine, powerful and reflects all the typicality of its terroir.
