Started in 2003 by the Saade Family (from Chateau Marsyas in neighboring Lebanon), the Domaine de Bargylus is one of the last few running wineries in war-torn Syria. The Bargylus estate is precisely located near Deir Touma, literally translated as the ‘convent of Thomas’, not far from the archaeological vestiges of the crusading era and the illustrious Saladin. Typically Mediterranean in style, Bargylus elegantly combines strength and refinement: it has a strong color, the range of aroma is perceivable through the fresh fruit and minerality that translates the very shingly soil. The balance between sweetness, that comes with sunniness and the grapes, full maturity, and salinity that comes with limestone, allows Bargylus to convey a strong soil identity and an inimitable taste. The Bargylus Red is composed of two-thirds Syrah, and one-third a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Bargylus is an essentially Mediterranean wine with a surprisingly singular style. At no point does the Syrah dominate, the natural tendencies of this varietal having been suppressed by the intense terroir. Here Syrah expresses less black fruit and pepper, with a greater emphasis on floral aromas and a bias towards peony. Deep purple hue, the nose is complex with notes of spices & truffles. There is precision in the mouth with excellent balance between the integrated tannins, the elegant fruit and mineral freshness. The finish is powerful and sustained. Crafted from organically-grown grapes
