Gassies – Margaux 2015

Gassies wines are selected from the youngest vines at Chateau de Rauzan Gassies, which has belonged to the Quie family since 1946. The Chateau has been producing wine since the 18th Century and as a result has a certain reputation in England. The vineyards cover an area of 25 ha and consist of the main Bordeaux grape varieties. They have an average age of 35 years.
Vinification takes place in several stages: a cold pre-fermentation maceration for 48 hours, alcoholic fermentation and maceration in stainless steel vats, then malolactic fermentation in barrels and vats. Finally, the wine is matured in oak barrels for 12 months, lot par lot, prior to the final blending.
This wine offers a fresh, vibrant bouquet with delicate notes of wilted violet petal already defining its Margaux origin. The palate is medium bodied with chalky tannin, crisp acidity, smoked aromas, pencil shavings, spicy hints. Savoury leather in the mouth, black briary fruits, and a precise, focused, spicy finish that bodes well for the future.

The origins of the noble house of Gassies in the Medoc go back to medieval times. The Lords of Gassies were considered knights, and owed allegiance to the owners of Chateau Margaux. Monsieur de Rauzan acquired the seigneury in 1661 and is responsible for establishing the reputation of its wine. The estate was divided into two parts in 1785. The name of one of these, Rauzan-Gassies, very much reflects its historic roots.
Since 1946, second growth Chateau Rauzan-Gassies has belonged to the Quie family, who also owns chateaux Croizet- Bages (a great growth of Pauillac) and Bel Orme Tronquoy de Lalande. Monsieur Paul Quie undertook a major renovation of the vineyard during the postwar period. This was finalised by his son, Jean-Michel, who took over management in 1968. Their passion for fine wine is very much in the tradition of the great growths of Bordeaux, and one of Jean-Michel Quie’s greatest pleasures is to share his wine with people who are dear to him.
