Purgatori is crafted from old vines of Carignan, Garnacha & Syrah from the small Costers del Segre DO, in the heart of the Catalunya. As far back as 1770, the monks of the Montserrat abbey carried out their penance at the Desterrats estate. The area was known for its extreme climate and harsh conditions. Their task: working the land to provide food for the diocese. Their legacy: discovering a new terroir and a superlative wine. The legenDecanter: Enormous barrels vanishing mysteriously. Some said it was the angels taking them to heaven. Aged in oak barrels (40% new oak) for 15 to 18 months, it offers a full-bodied, fleshy mouthfeel tempered by fresh acids. Extraordinary dark cherry red color with great depth. Intense floral (violet) and fruit (cassis) aroma with exquisite Mediterranean garrigue (thyme) coming through, joined by notes of smoke and spices (cocoa). Full and intense on the palate, with ripe, velvety, wonderfully elegant tannins. An exceptional wine, flavorful and full bodied, with a characteristic, terroir-imparted hint of minerality (graphite). James Suckling: 92Pts; Falstaff: 92Pts; Decanter: 91Pts; Jancis Robinson: 17/20Pts
