The 2017 Rauzan-Segla was bottled at the end of May 2019 according to winemaker Nicolas Audebert. It has a broodier nose than expected, perhaps a tad closed after bottling, but there is certainly sufficient blackberry and raspberry fruit, subtle pressed violet, soupcon of shucked oyster shell scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins struck through by a fine bead of acidity. It feels rounded and velvety in texture, quite persistent in the mouth with a caressing finish that perhaps does not quite deliver the complexity or pixelation of a really top growing season. Otherwise, plainly speaking, bloody delicious.

About the Brand

The history of Chateau Rauzan-Segla begins under the reign of Louis XIV, when Pierre de Rauzan acquires the estate in 1661. Over time, generations of Rauzan succeed at the head of the property. The reputation of Rauzan-Segla’s wines is growing remarkably and they are among the most highly rated in Bordeaux. They seduce many personalities and especially Thomas Jefferson who, during his journey in the vineyards of Bordeaux, discovered this vintage and ordered several crates. A few years later, the 1855 ranking will place Chateau Rauzan-Segla at the rank of Second Grand Cru Classe. In 1903, Frederic Cruse, owner of the estate, had the current chateau built. But time passes and the castle falls asleep little by little. It will be necessary to wait until 1994, with the acquisition of the domain by the house Chanel, so that the complete renovation of the field gives back to the Castle and its park all its brightness.
